One viewer commented, "I'll never listen to Beethoven's Ninth the same way again."
At least six of us* saw Following the Ninth at the Grand Cinema in Tacoma on December 17th. The movie was only slightly longer than the symphony and showed how the piece has been used in four countries - Chile (following the overthrow of Allende in 1973), China (during the Tiananmen Square protest in 1989), Germany (when the Berlin wall came down in 1989) and Japan (where it is played throughout the country each December).
It was a very moving experience, both for the power of the familiar music and for the four country experiences which had the common theme, "We are all together." You can read the New York Times review here.
